Designer of the Month
Architect by training, Nada Zeineh has been involved in various projects in Lebanon since 1987 and alongside has been designing jewellery in various materials. Her label Nounzein was established in 2004 and since then she has dedicated herself exclusively to jewellery and to small sculptures like mobiles, stabiles or small flower tables.
For her, every piece is a project in itself, born from a dream, a souvenir and a ‘collective memory’.
She recently spoke to us about what excites her, her design aesthetics and what the future holds for Nounzein.
How did you first get into jewellery making?
It started as a game, modeling clay, creating birds and angels as decoration for Xmas trees and brooches for my friends. I then joined a ceramic studio and used terracotta and gold leaves for my first pieces. Brass wires and sheets followed.
How would you describe your brand?
I would say that my jewellery is simple, joyful, light and timeless.
What is your design process?
It starts with a desire, sometimes unconscious, leading me to work directly on my piece, finding the right shapes, proportions, colours. Again, it is a kind of playful activity that takes all my attention until the piece is finished. I can then give it for production to the different craftsmen I work with. I rarely draw my pieces except when I need to have very precise motifs that need computer skills.
Do you have any favourite piece from your collection?
Of course I have a favorite piece.... it is always the latest one, the newborn.
What can we expect to see from you in future?
I hope new collections. In fact I have a big project in mind but I prefer to develop it before I talk about it
What is your motto in life?
Nature has so much more imagination and creativity than we do ...let's just live it.
