Designer of the Month
Born and raised in Beirut, Sara Barraj, founder of Cera Barr is driven by performance art to create high-fashion costume jewellery.
Strongly passionate about creating bold and extravagant body pieces, she takes inspiration from ancient goddesses and current sartorial trends to create the ultimate statement jewellery.
We spoke to her about her inspiration, her design process and her love for travelling.
How did you first get into jewellery making?
As a singer and former drama teacher driven by performance art, I focused my creative energy towards costume design and began making bold body pieces to wear on stage.
How would you describe your brand?
CERA BARR embodies the 'Ancient Goddess turned Superhero' Think Aphrodite turned Shera in today's world. - Fun, fearless and open to stand out in a crowd.
What is your favourite material to work with?
Handmade, mainly copper carved and plated in gold or silver, this material allows me to stretch my creativity to create beautiful pieces that are affordable and accessible for everyone.
Where do you get inspiration?
Traveling opens up a curiosity in me to design different things. I love picking up on exotic vibes and blending that with the knowledge and culture I already have. Creating something new for the women who look for standout items that they know not everyone else will be wearing keeps me inspired and tapped into doing what I love.
What is your design process?
I look for patterns and elements in nature that would look beautiful worn on the body. I then draw them, carve and engrave my design on to the copper or silver and then adorn with stones and crystals (if used) and finally lacquer them in polished or matte gold/silver or rose gold.
Do you have any favourite piece from your collection?
The Warrior necklace is special because it’s my first 3D statement necklace and it’s super light. It always leaves an amazing impression worn and attracts a lot of positive attention. It’s an iconic CERA BARR Ancient Goddess turned Superhero piece.
What can we expect to see from you in future?
More intricate details and deeper patterns. I’m currently on a yoga/reiki retreat in Spain and I’m using a lot of powerful symbols in my practices which I would love to blend into my style of jewellery for even more protective armor shielding.
What is your motto in life?
Shine your light and celebrate life with every expression.
